Bridge Broadband Ltd, part of Flexia Plc, today announced the launch of a new one-way satellite broadband service targeted at the UK residential and home office market. The service is primarily aimed at those people working from home who are currently unable to gain access to a broadband connection due to their location. The service will use a dish similar to those used by satellite TV, but smaller than those used by their current two-way systems, to receive the satellite download. Upload will be through a normal terrestrial telephone link. The business will be following the 400kbps download model, pioneered by Hughes Network Services in the USA. “Whilst we have been primarily focused on providing two-way satellite broadband solutions for the SME market, we have been very encouraged by the level of interest in a low-cost satellite service, and believe that the time is now right to offer such a service,” said Steve Smith, co-founder and managing director of Bridge Broadband. “We have also recognised that achieving the right price point is critical for success in this market, and we are therefore aiming to offer equipment and installation for approximately £400, with a service charge of under £50 per month, which will include unlimited return path calls.” The service is scheduled to be available from the end of June across the UK, unlike BT’s offering which will be on trial for a further six months before it is generally available. The service will ensure that the 40 per cent of consumers not in reach of an ADSL enabled exchange will be able to get a broadband solution. BT has only currently ADSL enabled 1010 of its 5,600 exchanges. Bridge Broadband will market the service through a network of strategic partners. Smith added: “This will bring the UK into line with what has been available to consumers in the United States for some time through our partner, Hughes Network Systems. As the world’s leading provider of broadband satellite, they have already installed well over 100,000 one-way systems in the US alone, so both the technology and consumer acceptance are proven. We believe this has to represent another positive step forward in the process of delivering a truly ‘Broadband Britain’.” © Bridge Broadband Ltd 2002 |
